The Su-38 Slamhound is the Russian ground attack aircraft in EndWar.
Overview[]
This single-seat multi-role fighter is kitted out to perform ground attack and troop support missions. It has reinforced cockpit armour and numerous hardpoints for munitions. Its forward-swept wing design and vectored thrust abilities allow it to be manoeuvrable at low speeds and high angles of attack.[1]
Specifications[]
- Crew: 1 Pilot
- Powerplant: 2 high efficiency afterburning turbofans with thrust vectoring and digital control
- Armament: Unknown, only sighted carrying rockets/AGM's
Callsigns[]
Slamhounds are given callsigns when Air Strikes are launched, with their callsigns referring traditional Russian terms, accidents or deformities:
- Cossack
- Hunchback
- Blowback
Trivia[]
- There is in fact an Su-38, a cropduster. An image can be seen here.
- It appears when the player calls in "Air Strike" when playing as Russia, as well as parked at Rovanemi Air Base regardless of the defending faction.
- Physically, the aircraft resembles the Su-47 Berkut, an experimental, swept-wing supersonic fighter developed in the 1980s by the Soviet Union
- The new Russian fighter is the Sukhoi Su-57, while the Su-25 Frogfoot is not going anywhere, having earned the love of everyone who's not on the receiving end of it. The Su-47 itself is a technology demonstrator for fifth generation fighter aircraft.
- It's understandable why the Su-38 does not use the gun - it's likely the lightweight single-barrel (yet still at 1500 RPM) burst-firing GSh-30-1. One burst is usually enough to pulverize any aircraft, but the typical supply of 150 rounds is not enough for ground attack. A ground-attack version is likely to carry twin GSh-23-2L or GSh-30-2, like the Su-25 does, or even GSh-23-5 or GSh-30-6 Gatling cannons. The recoil of these weapons slows the aircraft significantly, and was known to launch the instrument panel into the pilot or cause the canopy to jettison. The R-series rocket pod that seems to be used for the Level 1 Air Strike is a cheap and recoilless solution.
- "Slamhound" is not a NATO reporting name. All "F"ighter NATO reporting names start with an F such as Flanker, Fishbed and Fulcrum. S stands for Surface-to-Surface, such as the Scud missile. Russians themselves do not give official names to aircraft.
